Costa Rica politics

I’ve been seeing huge posters all over the place with a photo of a woman and the words “Laura: Firm and Honest” in Spanish. Turns out there is a presidential primary here in early June. Several candidates are running to replace the popular, longtime president Oscar Arias, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in the 80s for trying to end civil wars in the region. Laura Chinchilla, the former vice president, is ahead in the latest polls for her party, and there is a leading African American female candidate in the anti-free trade party as well. Good article here, “Is Costa Rica read for a female president?”
